Types of whiplash injury

Not all whiplash injuries are easy to treat - particularly those that occurred in high speed accidents, can potentially be severe and have long lasting effects.

The most severe types of whiplash injury involve damage to the discs and vertebrae in the neck, which allow the neck to move and protect the spinal cord.

If the whiplash motion is very abrupt, the vertebrae in the neck might sustain a fracture. A hairline fracture to a vertebra is unlikely to require an operation or any serious treatment. A person in with this condition may be given a soft collar and advised to rest for several weeks.

It is also possible to suffer damage to the spinal cord if one of the discs in the neck is forced into the spinal cord or nerve roots. If this happens, urgent surgery may be necessary to try to correct the condition through fusion or decompression.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 02392 489860 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
