Whiplash-Associated Disorders

Whiplash is a condition caused by the sudden whipping backwards and forwards of the head and neck. A study, by the Quebec Task Force on Whiplash-Associated Disorders (WADs) looked into the whiplash motion and the resulting injuries, was conducted to assist health care providers and insurance carriers in rendering care for these types of injuries.

"Whiplash is an acceleration-deceleration mechanism of energy transfer to the neck. It may result from rear end or side-impact motor vehicle collisions, but can also occur during diving and other mishaps. The impact may result in bony or soft-tissue injuries (whiplash injury), this in turn may lead to a variety of clinical manifestations (Whiplash-Associated Disorders)."

Whiplash-Associated Disorders include a number of symptoms, such as neck pain, restricted neck movement, shoulder pain, tingling, dizziness, and tinnitus.
