Active whiplash protection systems

It is common for drivers or passengers involved in car accident to experience pain and discomfort in and around the neck area for weeks or sometimes months after the event. This condition commonly known as a whiplash injury, is caused by the head being 'whipped' rapidly forwards and then rapidly backwards at the moment of impact.

A head restraint or 'headrest' is now known to be your best protection from a whiplash injury, the problem is 99% of cars on the road have head restraints that don’t work. This is because they are often un-adjustable and designed for 'looks' instead of function, and even if they are adjustable - they are not adjusted correctly by the user and still offer poor protection.

Today many car manufacturers have realised that safety is a big issue for potential car buyers, and we now see cars fitted with 'active whiplash protection systems'. Unfortunately these systems are by no means a standard item in new vehicles like airbags have become now. The manufacturers who do produce cars with these systems, like Volvo, Saab, Mercedes to name but a few, still only add them to their more upmarket models.

These dynamic systems work by first making the head restraint sufficiently adjustable to be positioned where it will actually work. In other words it should be within about 2 inches of the back of your head, with the top of the restraint being above the top of your head.

Secondly by incorporating specially designed seats, the torso is supported and allowed to flex backwards, which allows it to stay in alignment with the head and reduce the amount of stress on the neck. Studies have shown that these types of active whiplash protection systems can in some cases reduce whiplash injuries by up to 43% in women and up to 31% in men.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury and the accident was not your fault, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 0845 676 0615 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
