Adjusting car headrests to avoid whiplash

Sustaining a whiplash injury in a road accident is quite a common occurance. In a lot of cases the person sustaining the injury is driving a car with an adjustable headrest, which they may think gives them good protection from a whiplash injury. The simple fact is yes it does, but only if it's correctly adjusted.

So why do I need to adjust the headrest?

A whiplash injury is where your neck is flexed violently forwards and then backwards, causing damage to nerve or muscle tissue in the neck. If your headrest is positioned for example, too low - the head can jerk back over the head support and over extend the neck, resulting in an injury. Taking a few moments to adjust your headrest correctly could make the difference between a major whiplash injury - with potentially serious long term effects, or just a minor one - and a quick recovery.

Adjusting your car seat headrest

Ask someone to come out to the car with you, and sit in the driver (or passenger) seat. Ask the person with you to adjust the headrest so that the top middle part of the headrest cushion is level with the height of your eyes. This is now in the correct position.

Try to make a habit of making this adjustment, whether you are a driver or a passenger, in any vehicle you travel in.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury and the accident was not your fault, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 0845 676 0615 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
