Headaches and head pain caused
by a whiplash injury




The symptoms of a whiplash injury sometimes take time to develop after an accident. Some of the more common symptoms include neck pain, neck swelling, tenderness along the back of the neck, a reduction in movement in the back of the neck and headaches.

A headache or series of headaches following a whiplash injury can be caused by the stresses and strains put on the muscles and ligaments in the neck, or sometimes from compression on nerves in the upper spine. Sometimes an individual will experience pain all over the head, and some will only feel pain in particular parts of the head.

These kind of headaches should normally resolve themselves after a few weeks, but they can persist for several months after an accident and should always be monitored by your GP in case further investigation is required.

Particularly if any kind of head trama or blow to the head occurred in the accident, and even if an x-ray or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan had already been made to check for any signs of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) - any type of headache or head pain should always be reported to your medical consultant or GP.
