Motorway lane discipline guide

Motorways are actually one of the safer types of road to drive on. Most accidents on motorways occur either because drivers are going too fast for the weather conditions, or because they use poor lane discipline.

The basic rule is to always use the left-hand lane unless you are overtaking, however, watch out for road signs and markings, sometimes (especially where motorways merge) the left-hand lane might lead off the main motorway. Allow plenty of time for your actions on a motorway. Consider every move carefully and make full use of your mirrors. Signal well before you start to manoeuvre so the traffic behind you is prepared for your actions.

Manage the speed and the space around your vehicle so that you are always a safe distance from the vehicle in front. One of the ways to achieve this is to use the 2 second rule - this is a simple way to ensure that you are not too close to the vehicle in front.

The 2 second rule

  • As you are driving, pick a fixed reference point on or by the side of the road ahead of you eg. a road sign or lamp post

  • When the vehicle in front of you passes this reference point say to yourself 'one two thousand, two two thousand' (This takes approximately 2 seconds to say)

  • If your vehicle passes the reference point while you are still speaking, this means you are too close to the vehicle in front
Also remember that just because you think 70 mph is fast enough for anyone, it doesn't mean that the driver of the car behind you will think the same way - just let him go.

Don't hog the middle lane - if you have completed your overtaking manoeuvre then move back into the left lane.
