Myofascial massage for whiplash pain

Myofascial massage is a technique developed by therapists to help treat sporting injuries, reduce muscle pain and increase your range of motion. Myofascial release (as it is also known) is different from other types of massage because it specifically targets the fascia, which is the membrane that surrounds the muscles, as opposed to the actual muscle itself. The fascia is responsible for body structure and protecting our internal organs, and it can play an important part in the healing process. Damage to the fascia from a whiplash injury can seriously affect the range of motion in the neck.

Myofascial release massage helps by restoring the normal functioning of the fascia associated with the strained or injured muscles by gently extending these connective tissues back to their normal length. Many medical professionals advise that when used in conjunction with other massage techniques, it can be a very effective method to aid in the recovery process.

A typical session usually starts with a gentle massage to loosen the muscles and identify the areas that may need a closer look. The tightened fascia tissue will feel different to the therapists hands, and they can the concenrate on this area of tightness by gently stretching the fascia, then letting the tissues relax for a few moments.

Any treatment undergone for a whiplash injury should always be done in consultation with a medical professional, who will advise you on the best course of action for your condition.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury and the accident was not your fault, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 0845 676 0615 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
