The Government considers increasing driving fines up to £10,000. 18/06/14

The government is currently considering increasing the maximum penalties for some driving offences to £10,000.

New proposed guidelines for magistrates could mean drivers could receive fines of up to £10000 for offences including drink driving, speeding and defective tyres or brakes.

Other motoring offences such as driving through red traffic lights or using a mobile while driving could be raised from the current £1000 limit to £4000.

Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said the proposals would give magistrates the "greater powers" they need to punish offenders.

Many motoring organisations have however expressed misgivings about the fairness of such measures.
