Top ten highest 'earning' speed cameras
in Britain. 10/11/11

image Love them or hate them, most road safety organisations agree that speed cameras do help to improve road safety.

A recent analysis of government statistics revealed the top ten highest 'earning' speed cameras in the country.

As well as the top ten, the figures also revealed that there is actually a camera on the A348 in Dorset that has failed to catch a single speeding motorist in three years!

The camera that generates the most revenue for the government is on the A1(M) in Hertfordshire. This catches 789 speeding motorists a month on average, providing an estimated £568,080 per year.

Here is the complete list.

  1. A1(M) between junctions three and four, Hertfordshire. Generating an estimated revenue of £568,080

  2. A3 in Porstmouth. Generating an estimated revenue of £386,640

  3. A40, Western Avenue, London. Generating an estimated revenue of £359,280

  4. M60 junction 25, Manchester. Generating an estimated revenue of £329,760

  5. A116 in Hull. Generating an estimated revenue of £303,120

  6. A34 in Great Barr, West Midlands. Generating an estimated revenue of £270,000

  7. A21 at Tonbridge bypass. Generating an estimated revenue of £245,520

  8. A40 in Lea, West Mercia. Generating an estimated revenue of £231,840

  9. A1 in Colsterworth, Lincolnshire. Generating an estimated revenue of £219,600

  10. A1 in Elkesley, Nottinghamshire. Generating an estimated revenue of £208,800

image The 6,000 or so speed cameras generate around 100 million pounds a year which the Treasury puts into what is known as the 'consolidated fund'.

The government claims that this extra revenue ultimately helps them to provide funding to local authorities for improving road safety measures.
