What kinds of road accidents cause whiplash?

Neck and whiplash related injuries affect thousands of people every year who have been involved in road accidents on our roads. There are a multitude of different accident situations that may involve the drivers or passengers sustaining whiplash type injuries, all of which are entitled to claim compensation for the pain and discomfort they have suffered from the at-fault party's insurer.

Road accidents in particular make up the vast majority of whiplash injuies due to the simple fact that they invariably involve sudden increases or decreases in speed due to the impacts involved. The severity of any whiplash injury is largely dependant on the speed at which the vehicles collided, but even at low speeds someone can sustain a neck injury that could leave them in pain and off work for several weeks.

Whiplash from car accidents

By far the most common cause of whiplash injuries is from car accidents. Occupants of a vehicle that is unexpectedly struck from behind can be more susceptible to severe whiplash, particularly if they do not have correctly adjusted headrests.

The lack of headrest means that the head can 'whip' both forwards and backwards without restraint, which is more likely to result in an injury. How much protection that is provided by a fitted headrest depends on it's positioning with respect to the back of the occupants head. If it is adjusted so that the back of the neck is in contact with, or in front of the main cushion of the headrest, it may enable the bulk of the head to move back and over the top of the headrest in an impact - providing little or no protection.

A correctly adjusted headrest should have the centre of the cushion behind the back of the head, and not behind the back of the neck.

The fact that they are struck from behind may also mean that the occupants are not aware of the impending collision and so are unable to brace themselves in any way, and possibly limit their neck movements to some extent.

Whiplash from motorcycle accidents

Typically if a motorcycle rider collides with a vehicle at speed then because the rider is not restrained it is likely that they will be thrown off their bike. If a neck injury is sustained as a result of this it may not be technically be from whiplash but it can still be severe and even life threatening. If the rider manages to stay seated following a collision, they may still suffer from a whiplash injury even from a low speed impact.
