Can TENS relieve whiplash pain?

A whiplash injury is caused by a sudden movement of the head that can lead to muscle, ligament and other soft-tissue damage to the neck. Depending on the severity of the injury, the pain can be intense and last for many weeks. Common symptoms of whiplash include lingering neck pain, back pain, headaches and dizziness.

There are many treatment options for the whiplash sufferer, from conventional therapies and medications to various complimentary alternatives. One such alternative treatment is a TENS device, which stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

TENS is a simple non-invasive method of providing pain relief to the user. Small conductive pads are placed on or near the area of pain, then under the control of the user, the device sends soothing electrical pulses that are sent via the pads through the skin and along the nerve fibres. The pulses suppress pain signals to the brain, and also encourage the production of the bodys own natural pain killing chemicals, namely Endorphins and Encephalins.

It is still a matter of some debate as to exactly how TENS works. Some studies have shown that its pain killing properties are no better than a placebo (or non-active) device. In other words some doctors believe that the effects are purely psychosematic or 'imagined'. There is no doubt however, that a large number of people have found that it does provide pain relief for a number of different ailments, including whiplash injury pain.

Although TENS can actually be purchased 'over the counter' at pharmacists, it always worth checking with a medical professional when considering any alternative treatment for a severe whiplash condition.
