Whiplash pain more likely in women?

It is common for drivers or passengers involved in a rear-end car accident to suffer from aches and pains in and around the neck area, this condition commonly known as a "whiplash injury", and it happens to thousands of drivers every year.

Because the head is a heavy structure, the inertia causes it to be thrown forwards and backwards at rapid speed. When this occurs the muscles and ligaments in the neck are both extended and flexed beyond a normal comfortable level, causing damage to the muscle tissue and in some cases the spine.

It is still a subject of debate, but women are twice as likely to suffer from neck pain following a minor whiplash incident than men. Whether this is due to driving posture or seat positioning is still not clear. It has been suggested that because womens necks tend to be smaller and weaker than men's, then they may be more susceptable to injury - although this has still yet to be proved.

For both sexes, it is widely accepted that your best protection against a whiplash injury, is to have a vehicle with a correctly adjusted head restraint, for more information on head restraints or headrests in cars click here.
