Are your tyres legal? 29/10/15
Now that winter is upon us, checking the condition of your tyres becomes more important than ever.
Your vehicles handling and braking ability in wet or icy conditions will depend heavily on the condition of your tyres this winter.
What's more - if your vehicle is subjected to a spot check by the police, you could be fined if your tyres do not meet the legal requirements.
Tyre specification
Do you have the correct specification tyres for your type of vehicle? If the tyres on your vehicle are not suitable for the loading or speed of your vehicle, you may be liable to prosecution.
Tyre damage
If the tyre has any cuts which expose the underlying ply or cord of the tyre, then it could be illegal.
Tyre tread depth
The minimum legal tyre tread depth for cars, light vans and light trailers should be at least 1.6mm across 75% of the width of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.
For motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles the minimum tyre tread depth should be at least 1mm across 75% of the width of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre. Moped tyres should have visible tyre tread.
