27/03/19 UK set to adopt EU proposed vehicle speed limiting technology by 2022
The UK Department of Transport has announced that it is going to adopt the mandatory fitting of speed limiting technology provisionally agreed by the EU, regardless of the Brexit outcome.
Although road safety campaigners have welcomed the announcement, the AA has been less enthusiastic by stating that “a little speed” can help when overtaking or joining motorways.
According to the EU, the new technology could help to significantly reduce the number of serious injuries by 2038 and eventually reduce deaths caused by road traffic accidents by 2050.
EU Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said: "Every year, 25,000 people lose their lives on our roads. The vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error.
"With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when safety belts were first introduced."
The new technology works by combining information on local speed limits received by GPS with image recognition systems in the vehicle to set the appropriate maximum speed for the vehicle.
However, the intelligent speed assistance (ISA) system is will also be able to be ‘overridden’ by the driver by pressing the accelerator. This override will be ‘reset’ each time the vehicle is restarted.
Other systems that have also been approved include advanced emergency braking, lane-keeping technology, driving data recording and systems to automatically detect driver drowsiness.
