Nearly 60% of young drivers are using phones behind the wheel 02/05/2019
It has been illegal to drive whilst on the phone for nearly 17 years but a recent study by Go Compare Car Insurance has shown that 58% of our young drivers are using their phones whilst driving.
The study showed that 18% of all drivers have admitted to checking messages or emails whilst driving. 11% of them admitted to making calls with their hand-held devices. But an entire third of the 18 – 24-year olds questioned said that they also change music and adjust sat navs on their phones whilst behind the wheel.
The study also looked at whether they are using it whilst the vehicle is moving or whilst the vehicle is stationary, the young people’s figures only dropped by 2% with 56% of young people admitting to using their phones whilst the vehicle is moving.
At Car Call we handle a lot of accidents on the road and we want to warn our readers of the dangers that using a phone behind the wheel can cause. The only time you are legally allowed to use a hand held device is when the car is parked, the engine is off, and the handbrake is fully applied. If you are caught with your phone whilst driving, you can face fines of £200 and six points on your licence. If you are a new driver this would mean you would lose your licence. But on top of this if you are looking at your phone, you are not looking at the road and events can happen on the road in a split second and you won’t have the time to react if you aren’t watching the road.
It isn’t necessary to have to pick your phone up and risk your own and others safety by taking your attention off the road, we have lots of hands-free technology at our disposal and can set our phones up for sat nav or music before any journey.
