Ministers consider graduated licencing system for new drivers 18/07/19
The UK Department of Transport (DFt) has announced that it is considering a phased approach to allowing new drivers access to our roads.
This is intended to try and cut the number of accidents involving new inexperienced drivers on UK roads.
It is estimated that one in five drivers are involved in road accidents within a year of passing their driving test.
Similar schemes are already in operation in parts of the US, Canada and throughout Sweden.
Currently the only restriction involves the revocation of a driving licence if a driver accumulates 6 penalty points during the first two years after passing their driving test.
Plans include restrictions on night time driving and also the age of passengers in their vehicles.
Driving organisations have cautiously welcomed the proposals, wanting the restrictions to be thought through carefully so as not to overly burden new drivers or stop them from enjoying the many benefits of being able to drive.
