Surgery for whiplash injuries

Surgery for whiplash injuries will only be considered in extreme cases where all other non-invasive treatments have failed to alleviate the condition.

The are several possible procedures depending on the nature of the condition. Two of the more common procedures are described below.

An Anterior cervical discectomy is a common surgical procedure to treat nerve root or spinal cord compression caused by a whiplash injury. It involves the surgical removal of part of the invertebral disc which may be causing irritation to the spinal nerve roots. The purpose of this is to enlarge the nerve opening and relieve pressure on the spinal cord. After the disc is removed the resulting gap will be filled with bone and reinforced with a metal plate.

A Cervical corpectomy is similar to the above procedure but has the added complexity of removing vertebrae in addition to the discs.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 02392 489860 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
