New legislation to protect learner drivers. 25/06/12
From the 13 July, new legislation enables the registrar of approved driving instructors to immediately suspend the registration of an instructor who presents a danger to learner drivers.
The Road Safety Minister said:
"Driving instructors play a vital role in helping to ensure Britain’s roads remain among the safest in the world."
“The vast majority of instructors meet the extremely high standards we require of them, but in the very rare cases where an instructor presents a significant danger to the public, it is right that we take prompt and effective action to protect learners and other road users.” said Mike Penning.
This new power is intended to provide protection against instructors who have committed violent or sexual offences, or who provide tuition that is of a low standard.
Instructors can appeal against the decision and also claim compensation should the suspension prove to be unjustified.
