Driving under the influence of drugs or medicine. 15/01/14

The highway code states that you must not drive under the influence of illegal or prescription drugs.

Using illegal drugs when driving is dangerous and can affect your ability to control a vehicle safely.

Drugs can cause the following conditions:

  • Slow reaction times

  • Poor concentration

  • Blurred vision

  • Panic attacks

  • Paranoia

Driving under the influence of legal prescribed medicines can also be an offence if they have known side effects that impair your ability to drive safely.

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist if a particular medicine is safe to use whilst driving a vehicle.

Anyone found guilty of driving under the influence of drugs will suffer the same penalties as someone caught drink driving. The penalties are:

  • A 12 month driving ban

  • A £5000 fine

  • A criminal record

If a driver causes a fatality whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol and found guilty, they could go to prison for up to 14 years.
