How to use box junctions. 06/09/16

Box junctions are sometimes created when several roads intersect and have a special set of rules defined in the Highway Code on how to use them correctly.

A box junction exists when there is a large yellow cross hatched box covering the area of the junction.

The rules for using box junctions are shown below:

  • You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear

  • However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

  • At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.
