The hazard warning lights on your vehicle have a specific purpose and that is to warn other drivers of a problem with your vehicle or of a potential hazard ahead of you.

When you should use your hazard lights


  • If your vehicle has broken down and is stationary on a hard shoulder

  • If your vehicle has developed a fault whilst driving

  • If your vehicle has broken down and is obstructing the road

  • If you are driving but there is a hazard ahead of you


When you should not use your hazard lights


  • If you are driving slowly because you are lost or looking for somewhere

  • To hide the fact that you have parked in a dangerous or illegal place eg. on double yellow lines
