It’s looking Grey for UK car sales 22/01/19
2018 offered a breakthrough in car sales. Not only were car sales at the lowest they have been in the last 5 years, but for the first time ever Grey is the most popular colour of cars bought in the UK.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) one in 5 new cars bought last year were Grey. Meaning that half a million brits chose a Grey car in 2018, Grey has never been the most popular colour car in recorded history.
The previous favourites like Silver have fallen out of even the top 5 popular colours.
The top five popular colours were Grey, Black, White, Blue and Red. With old favourite silver coming in 6th place.
2018 may have been a good year for the colour Grey, however the year also saw the biggest drop in European car sales in the last 5 years. Some of this has been blamed on the introduction of a new emissions testing regime, causing a bottleneck in supplies because motor manufacturers struggling to get cars certified in time with the new emissions standards.
Britain’s car industry is still suffering from the announcement of 4,500 job losses at Jaguar, Land Rover and Ford’s Europe-sector restructuring, which will most likely see the loss of 1150 UK jobs in the companies.
BMW have also announced plant shutdowns after Britain is due to leave the EU and has begun stockpiling parts just in preparations.
Theresa May’s Brexit deals could see the introduction of tariffs being punished and border delays after March 29th. This will affect the supply chains that rely on parts coming across the channel, meaning that this could further affect the car sales of 2019.
