Paper car tax disc to be abolished in 2014. 9/12/13
In an effort reduce the costs associated with the administration of the current vehicle tax system, the UK government is to abolish the current tax disc system next year.
From the 1st of October 2014 motorists will be able to pay their car tax by direct debit annually, biannually or monthly.
The need for a visible paper tax disc on the vehicle has now been largely been superseded by the widespread adoption of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology linked to a DVLA database of digital vehicle tax information.
The current paper car tax disc system was originally introduced in 1921.
