Motor Accident?

What you should do if your car breaks down. 19/10/16

It's always good to remind yourself about the Highway code from time to time.

If you break down there are a number of things you need to remember that will help you stay safe at the road side.

What to do if you break down.

  • Try and get your vehicle off the road

  • Put your hazard warning lights on if your vehicle is causing an obstruction to warn other road users

  • Wear light coloured clothing or carry a high visibility jacket in the car and put it on

  • Put a warning triangle on the road at least 45 metres (147ft) behind your vehicle on the same side of the road. Be careful when placing the warning triangle but never use it if you break down on the motorway

  • If you can, keep your sidelights on at night and in poor visibility

  • Do not allow anyone to stand between your vehicle and the oncoming traffic

  • Do not stand where you will block other road users from seeing your vehicles lights
