Whiplash protection for babies

Babies can be particularly vulnerable to whiplash injuries in a car accident. This is because their heads are relatively heavy and consequently are very susceptable to incurring neck injuries. Careful consideration should be given when choosing a car seat, as the level of protection afforded by different seats varies considerably.

It is widely accepted that the highest level of protection against whiplash injuries in car accidents will be provided by a correctly fitted rear facing baby seat. This is because in an accident a rear facing seat will move a baby forward with the motion of the car, instead of against it.

Correctly placing and securing the car seat is also of vital importance, as an incorrectly fitted seat will provide little or no protection. For example fitting even a rear facing seat in the front of the vehicle is significantly less safe than the rear. This is because the front passenger airbag when activated, can push the seat out of place and into a dangerous position.
