Diagnosing acute whiplash injuries

The symptoms of any type of whiplash injury may not manifest themselves for hours or even days after an accident. If you have been involved in an accident and start to feel neck pain of any sort, you should seek medical advice from your doctor to establish the extent of your injury, and if the accident was not your fault, you may be able to claim compensation.

Typically a doctor will ask you what symptoms you are experiencing, these could include:
  • Disabling neck pain, possibly extending to the arm.

  • Headache

  • Fatigue or dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Jaw pain

  • Tingling sensations in the face or extremities.
A physical examination will then be made to identify signs of muscular spasm, points of tenderness and neurological issues relating to the upper and lower limbs. You may also be asked to attempt a number of simple neck movements, but only if the doctor feels that it is safe to do so. If a spinal injury is suspected you may also be sent for an x-ray or MRI scan to further asses your condition.

Acute whiplash injuries may be treated using a combination of physiotherapy, neck or back braces and sometimes surgery, but only where symptoms persist or non-invasive treatments have failed.

If you have sustained a whiplash injury or any injury following a road accident that was not your fault, you may be able to claim compensation. You can either claim online using the button below or call us now on 0845 676 0615 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
