Head injury and treatment for skull fractures

The vast majority of skull fractures require no specific treatment because the fracture in the bone will heal naturally over time. Recommended treatments will involve controlling pain, promoting healing, and preventing any further complications. The main concern with any skull fracture is the potential for traumatic brain injury, which can much more serious.

There are 4 main types of skull fracture that may occur as a result of a head injury:-

Linear Skull Fracture

Most linear skull fractures do not require a specific treatment. A simple, fairly straight-line crack will be detectable in an X-ray and will eventually heal by itself.

Basilar Skull Fracture

A linear skull fracture such as this, at the base of the skull can sometimes create complications. The fracture can sometimes cause a tear in the membrane (the “dura”) surrounding the brain. This can cause fluid surrounding the brain to 'leak out', in such situations it may be necessary to implant a drainage tube to give the dura a better opportunity to heal. This type of fracture can sometimes produce more serious complications requiring more complex surgery.

Comminuted Skull Fracture

If the bones of the skull are broken into fragments, it is known as a comminuted fracture, or radial fracture. Treatment is based on severity. A simple comminuted fracture – with the bones remaining in alignment and not depressed – is not exceptionally serious. Similar to a linear skull fracture, the bone will usually heal without specific treatment. However if bone fragments are dislodged, surgery may be sometimes be required to re-align or remove them.

Depressed Skull Fracture

If bone fragments are pushed inward from the impact, the injury is known as a depressed skull fracture. In the best case scenario, where the depression is not greater than the skull’s thickness and without showing any signs of brain damage requiring treatment, the fracture may not be treated and allowed to heal on its own, or for cosmetic reasons, it may be surgically elevated. In severe cases, a traumatic brain injury may be sustained.

No need to claim on your insurance

Anyone who has been involved in a road accident has the right to choose who repairs their vehicle. If you were responsible for the accident you were involved in, the company that insures your vehicle would normally deal with your accident claim.

However if you were not at-fault for the accident, you can choose to either claim on your own insurance policy or make a claim independently of your insurer. To find out more call 02392 484 244 and we will be happy to help.

We and our partners help thousands of people make independent accident claims. Our service enables motorists to get the help and assistance they need to resolve their accident related issues, with the costs being recovered directly from the at-fault driver on your behalf.

No excess to pay

Unfortunately even if an accident was not your fault, your insurer will almost certainly require you to pay your excess before any repair is started on your car.

This money should of course be recovered by an insurer at a later date, but with our service - you do not have to pay it at all.

By using our independent claims service, you are not making a claim on your insurance policy and so you will have no excess to pay.

Receive a comparable replacement hire vehicle

Not all insurance policies will include a replacement hire-car for you to use if yours is damaged and unroadworthy. In fact it is typically an 'optional extra' on your policy.

Other policies may offer a 'courtesy car' but this is often just a 'basic' saloon or hatchback which may not be suitable for your needs.

Car Call and its partners will provide a comparable replacement vehicle as part of our service. This means we will endeavour to supply a hire-vehicle that similar to your own in terms of its type, make and engine size.

So whether you drive a small hatchback or a prestige sports car, we will look to provide a similar hire-vehicle that suits your needs.
