How today's UK Budget 2011 will affect the motorist. 23/03/11
It looks like the many suggestions made by Motoring organisations and pressure groups may have had an effect on the Chancellors decisions when it comes to relieving some of the pain for the UK's car drivers in today's Budget announcements.
As it was hoped, it was decided to freeze the inflation-linked increase in fuel duty due to start this April until 2012.
But the Chancellor also managed to deliver a few surprises as well.
As result of the increase in fuel prices it was also announced that fuel duty will actually be cut by 1p per litre at 6pm tonight. This unexpected move should provide some relief as fuel prices seem to relentlessly climb even when the price of oil decreases. However this is no great surprise as oil companies have always been notoriously slow to pass on these reductions to the price of fuel at the pumps.
In addition to the aforementioned changes, the Chancellor has abolished the fuel duty 'escalator' and replaced it with a 'fair fuel stabiliser'. This means that when oil prices are high as they are at the moment, fuel duty will increase only by inflation. The revenue will instead be collected from both the oil and gas companies in the form of a 'Supplementary Charge' which in this case will be increased to 32% from midnight tonight. This charge will be adjusted accordingly with the price of oil on an annual basis.
Undoubtedly these announcements will be welcome news to most motorists.
