Whiplash injuries sustained from side impacts
The majority of road accident whiplash injuries occur from rear-impact collisions. The whiplash injury occurs as the front vehicle will speed up and then decelerate rapidly during the impact. A whiplash injury can however also be sustained from a side impact, although they tend to be much less severe.
The inertia of the impact in a side impact collision will throw your body away from the source of the impact and your head will move in the opposite direction, then rapidly back the other way. Because of the way the muscles and ligaments in your neck and shoulders are arranged, you are less likely to sustain a whiplash injury.
Rear-end collisions are much more likely to result in an injury. In a side impact collision, the shoulder provides a natural obstacle to extreme lateral bending. However, in a rear end collision, especially when the person does not have a head restraint, the head and neck can extend fully backwards until it hits either the car seat or even the persons own back, resulting in any number of possible whiplash injury types.
