Causes of whiplash injuries

The majority of road accident whiplash injuries occur from rear-impact collisions.

The whiplash injury occurs as the front vehicle will speed up and then decelerate rapidly during the impact. The occupants body is secured by the seat belt, but the head is not, therefore the head moves backwards and forwards rapidly in a 'whiplash' motion. The speed at which this occurs will dictate the severity of the whiplash injury.

Approximately one third of all whiplash injuries are caused by head-on collisions. The whiplash movement is the same as a rear impact except that the head is thrown forwards first, and then back.

The remaining whiplash injuries are made up from side impacts and impacts from other angles.

Injuries of this type are very common in road accidents. If you have sustained a whiplash injury and the accident was not your fault, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Please call us now on 0845 676 0615 for help and advice from one of our experienced claims advisors.
