Exercises to help relieve whiplash symptoms

If you have suffered a whiplash injury, you may be suffering from a number of symptoms including neck pain and stiffness of the neck. There are many possible treatments and therapies which your medical practitioner can advise you about.

Traditionally a soft neck collar may be prescribed, but many experts now recommend that rather than restricting movement, gentle movement and neck exercise is a more effective aid to a quick recovery.

Below is a simple exercise to help relieve the pain and stiffness associated with a whiplash injury. Please note that it should only be undertaken under advisement from your GP, and may not be suitable for all types of injury.

  • Whilst in a standing position, with your arms at your sides and looking forward. Bend the head gently forward, and then slowly back again to your starting position.

  • From the same position, bring your chin slowly down to your neck, then gently move your head forward so that you are looking at your chest. Bring head slowly back to your starting position.

  • From the starting position, gently tilt your head backwards so that you are looking at the ceiling, then slowly back again to the starting position.

  • Whilst looking straight ahead, tilt your head gently sideways and to the left, so that your left ear is roughly 2 inches (5cm) from your shoulder. Return the head slowly back to the starting position. Repeat the motion for the right hand side.

  • Now from the starting position, and whilst looking straight ahead and keeping your head level, slowly turn your head to look to the left (as if you were crossing a busy road). Now slowly turn your head back to the starting position. Repeat the movement for the right hand side.
