Are women more likely to suffer from whiplash?
Studies have been carried out in Sweden that suggest that women are three times more likely to suffer a whiplash injury than men. The study conducted at Umea University was based on analysing whiplash injury claims from more than 400 accidents during the 1990s.
The study suggested that the increased risk was partially due to women tending to adjust their seats closer to the steering wheel and in a more upright position.
The results of the study were compared to results from tests conducted using crash test dummies, and they concluded that the female crash test dummies currently used did not accurately replicate an average sized woman. In addition to this it was claimed that the differences in seat adjustments were not catered for when conducting the tests, although both claims have since been disputed.
In general however it is agreed that a properly adjusted head restraint is the best protection against a whiplash injury for either sex.
